You are probably Coping, or just Coping.
It’s great to be Coping if you’re thrown into situations that are difficult. Well done!
And sometimes you might be coping because you don’t know you can be any different, or that your resilience could be higher.
Understanding Coping
Here the level of stress is ok, but there’s not much room for anything else.
This is the last main state of resilience which is stress-dominated. When a person is Coping, they are able to absorb the level of stress sufficiently, but they have no capacity for anything else. Their resources are all being used up Coping. They are likely to feel exhausted, demotivated and sometimes disconnected. They will not feel content or happy.
Coping is not a very high resilience state, but it’s a place of higher health and happiness than Fragmentation or Breakdown. And, it is at least stable.
First Steps
Get some space for yourself. And consider how to get more energy.
Explore the top resilience enablers:
- Being Present – Reclaim/create some me-time. Each day if you can. Even 10 minutes will help. Examples: Take a slightly longer shower in the morning. Walking slowly. It enables you to be calm and feel grounded. In skill terms, it enables you to notice more, to widen your perspective, to listen to yourself and to others, and therefore really ‘see’ what is happening. It also allows you to connect with your vision of what you want in any situation.
- Energy – Consider how you might stabilise your energy. Energy and resilience are directly correlated. They are not the same thing, but they follow the same ups and downs. Explore all elements of your energy: physical, emotional, mental and spiritual. For physical energy get some exercise that raises your heart rate a bit, even walking fast or going up the stairs; for emotional energy, laugh! watch a funny film, or be with someone who you like laughing with; for mental energy think of something to be thankful for, each day, they can be very simple like feeling the sun on your face; and finally for spiritual energy pat yourself on the back for Coping, it’s brilliant that you are.
